While on my last family vacation to southern California I took some time off from the theme-parks to scout out and possibly get some good panoramic images of both LA and San Diego. Although I was not fortunate enough to get a perfect sunset in either city I was able to find some good locations. I present these shots not as finished pieces but as a glimpse at the research that goes in to some of my finished pieces. In LA the challenge is the smog. My guess is the best time to shoot the city in the winter or spring as things seem to be crisper. In San Diego the challenge was the morning marine layer. It effectively eliminated any hopes of getting a sunrise shot. Lucky I was able to make the San Diego location just as the sun sank below the horizon.

Last weekend I taught my first photography workshop. I have been wanting to share my approach to photography for some time now and let me tell you it went great. I spent the weekend out in Heppner Oregon conducting classes, critiques, and applying the knowledge in the field. Though I was there mainly to teach I was able to get a few shots which I have included in this post. I look forward to teaching my next class.

To document the entirety of Dan’s sculptures it was critical to use a rotating stop motion technique. I have been working on refining this rotating technique and I must say I’m happy with the results. The fist image is a example of the animation and the remaining images are still detail shots of his work.

West Meets East is a inter-media performance that combines digital projection, photography, and black and white paint. Both analog and digital mediums combine on one plain to create a unique interaction between old and new. This performance was inspired by a week long trip to Kyoto Japan and surrounding areas. It was captured through the use of time lapse photography. The performance was held at Dai-ichi travel on first Thursday February 5th 2009. Please note that all the color you see is digital projection (light) and the black line and white fields are paint on the wall.

Over the last few months I have been studying the Portland skyline’s sunrise and sets through a new panoramic process I have been developing. I am working hard to develop the process and discover new locations from which to view the city. Check back often to see the latest additions to the gallery.

Although my main mission while in New York was to scout out and shoot panoramic locations I couldn’t help to take some quick shots while walking form location to location.

These images were taken while on my last trip to New York City. Though I only had four days in the city I was able to capitalize on every moment. As a result of my efforts I was in position for every sunrise and was able to leave New York with twelve stunning compositions. I consider these images to be rough drafts and plan to continue processing them to a finished state. Once I have them dialed I will use them to approach various New York galleries about a show.

Last fall Gabe, Micky, Adam and I all meet up to tour our bikes through southern Utah. Our route took us up through Zion national park and on to Escalate. Along the way we climbed long steep uphill grades, rode along a hogs back and hit some seriously steep downhill. All with my camera in hand.
